DSE 40 Ch Communicator D1793 value pack                                                                             and warehouse TE1172WT

This is a small new handheld UHF FM radio transceiver available from Dick Smith (D1793)and the Warehouse (TE1172WT) for sometimes on special only for NZ$99.00/    Warehouse    $79.00 for two!! hence the name "Value pack" ! The radio found at the Warehouse is a rebadged version of the Dick Smith  one .made by the same company ,  It doesnt come with any extras and requires 4 AAA batteries , Its operational  key presses for menus is identical to the Dick smith version . It  too will have to be operated on VOX to work with the Bike to Bike headsets.
The Dick Smith version:   Each of the radios are supplied with 4 AAA NiMHi 600mAh rechargeable cells and a single charging unit that takes both radios. The radios have VOX , 38 ch CTCSS, 40 Ch and are operated by push button only  ( no rotary vol control) this is a little clumsy with M/C gloves on . The transmitter is claimed 500mW which is about usual for these radios given the 600 mA battery capacity . All the features within the radio are selected via a menu and a series of key presses  and there is the usual facility of locking the keyboard . I have purchased a pair of these radios for evaluation and Mic/speaker plug connection .
This is a 2.5mm socket with tip mic audio, ring speaker and sleeve common earth , BUT does not allow the standard PTT operation as does  the Digitor radio ( different internal 2.5mm plug connections) To use the Motorcycle headsets on this radio, you must operated them in VOX mode

WARNING :The VOX is not exactly crash hot in these two  radios,  I notice the VOX mode is slow on the uptake with a delay of up to 0.5 second ! it will miss the first syllable every time! so if you are going to use these little radios be mindful of this .  A slow vox uptake is no big deal, just insert a "redundant word " at the start of each sentence  ie Bob...(or what ever their name is )...blah blah blah ,  this gives time for the vox to trigger! some times the press of the PTT switch is enough to initiate its operation.

Other than that they seem to work quite well for their price , They use the same headset and Harness as the Uniden 041. Having rechargeable Nickel metal hydride batteries in the Dick Smith radio is a real advantage too!

You are better to modify these radios and place an extra socket in the back of them  , so you can run the PTT  off a button on the handlebar ,i can tell you how to do this it is not difficult but you must  be able to handle a soldering iron !!

Headsets with PTT to suit above radio  (each) $NZ100.00   free airpostage anywhere !

The D1793 units we used to sell where  modified so you can plug in a remote PTT button into the back of the unit and velcro the PTT button   onto  the handlebar .Im happy to tell you how to do this .
